Chardonnay is the most planted white grape varietal in the world.

One of the reasons for this is that it is such an amenable grape. It will take on the characteristics of the vineyard where it is grown and also the style that the winemaker wants to produce. It performs equally well in both cool and warm climates and responds remarkably well to oak ageing.

Chardonnay is the grape behind some of the absolute best wines in the world and is a major grape in Champagne too. It can be, however, misunderstood. The ABC (anything but Chardonnay) movement in the 1990s and early 2000s was a reaction to the cheap mass market products coming mainly from Australia and California at that time. They produced these thick “oak bombs” and have tainted some people’s view of the grape sadly. These clumsy, heavy flavours were a winemaking choice but the poor grape gets the blame!
