Samuel Billaud Chablis, 2018
This quintessential Chablis is a crisp, dry, aromatic and elegant wine, brimming with vibrant notes of grapefruit and fresh oranges. The vines are given maximum attention, many of which have been in the family for over 200 years. Blind, you’d call this Premier Cru.
Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons, 2018
The beauty of Vaillons vineyards is that they have an excellent south-easterly exposure that captures all the morning sun, but stays relatively cool in the afternoon. The stony soil contributes bite and freshness to this fine, aromatic, fruity wine. Vinified in stainless steel to preserve the maximum amount of fruit, this is the most forward of all Samuel’s premiers crus. Wonderfully aromatic nose of lemon zest followed by straw and white flowers. Lifted with white peach and citrus fruit flavours on the palate.
Chablis 1er Cru Fourneaux, 2018
Fourneaux Chablis is from a warmer vineyard on a south-facing slope in the village of Fleys. Made from 100% organically farmed grapes and vinified in stainless steel, this is a fatter richer style of Chablis with a ripe, succulent texture and impressive, long aftertaste. Lovely nose of peach, flint and white flowers. Very fresh, with a hint of oak on the finish. Enjoy with salmon in a cream or butter sauce.
Chablis 1er Cru Montmains, 2018
Next door to Vaillons with a similar south-easterly exposure. The combination of a rich, clay soil and 50 year old vines gives a fuller-bodied, rounder wine with impressive presence and persistence. Chablis 1er Cru Montmains soars from the glass with a lively bouquet of beeswax, citrus fruit, green apple and white flowers.
Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux, 2018
Butteaux produces one of the richest wines of the left bank. This is ripe and honeyed. The family ferments and ages the wine in 600 litre barrels from Tonnellerie Doreau as the stronger oak marries beautifully with the concentrated fruit from the eighty year old vines.
Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre, 2018
This Chablis comes from two plots of vines at different altitudes within Montée de Tonnerre; Chapelot near the base and Triangle higher up. Enjoy tremendous depth of fruit, an intriguing salinity and an impressive, long finish. Minerality and salinity really define this premier cru that could be a grand cru; perfect with grilled/ poached fish or a goat cheese salad.
