Last week we held our Annual Summer Tasting at Holmes Mill in Clitheroe. Thank you to everyone that came and made it such a great occasion. But don’t worry if you couldn’t make it, here at The Whalley Wine Shop, we’ve narrowed the list down to the top 12!

Let’s start with the top 3 white wines…

1.Villa Bianchi Verdicchio, Castelli di Jesi Classico, Umani Ronchi £11.49

This white wine is bright and aromatic, lifted by a clean streak of acidity on the finish. Today, Villa Bianchi aims to express all the typical features of Verdicchio by bringing out its aromatic notes of freshness and elegance. This is achieved by careful selection of the grapes.

2. Alvear, 3 Miradas Vino de Pueblo Montilla-Moriles, £14.99

This white wine is made from Pedro Ximinez grapes. It’s so interesting! Earthy on the nose with lots of citrus, mandarin and tropical fruits on the palate. Alvear is one of the most historic wineries in Spain and is renowned for producing Sherry. If you want to try something new and exciting then this wine is for you!

3. Planeta Terebinto, Grillo, Sicilia DOC £15.99

The Planeta Terebinto is an aromatic Sicilian variety. It’s aromatic and intense on the nose. Aromas of apricot, lychees and tropical fruit. Named after the terebinth which is a shrub with glossy fronds, always associated with Sicily and the Mediterranean countryside.

Now for the reds..

4. Feudo di Santa Tresa, Frappato £9.99

No one could say it better other than Jancis Robinson! “A light red with cracking energy and such cheerful refreshing fruit that it’s like a dose of your youth in a glass. It’s the liquid equivalent of being five years old with a bucket, a spade and a big sandy beach”.

5. Bonera, Mandrarossa, Sicilia £17.99

This Sicilian wine is 50% Nero d’Avola and 50% Cabernet Franc. It’s juicy with flavours of plum, cocoa and spice. 6 months oak ageing has given it real finesse. The mouthfeel is firm, tight and fresh.

6. Pyros, Malbec, Argentina £18.49

Pedernal Valley in San Juan is known for limestone at 1400m. 13% of the Earth’s land structure is limestone, but 90% is in Europe. Intense, purplish red color. It shows a fruit character together with herbal and balsamic notes. It is fresh with a lingering texture.

Drum roll please for the sparkling wines…

7. Biscardo Prosecco Spumante Millesimato £12.49

This is a VINTAGE prosecco! Elegant, delicate and aromatic with hints of apples and honeysuckle. Excellent as an aperitif, perfect with appetizers but also an ideal accompaniment to the entire meal, particularly with fish courses.

8. Jansz NV, Tasmania £17.99

Sparkling wine with Champagne grape varieties, but from Tasmania. A combination of honeysuckle and citrus fruit, along with rich nougat and toasted nuts. One of Australia’s most reliable sparkling wines, from grapes sourced from several cool-climate sites in Tasmania.

9. Woodchurch Rose Sparkling, England £32.99

Rose gold in colour with floral and red berry aromas, the wine is full of fruit flavours including strawberry, peach, and melon combined with tangy citrus notes. The perfect party aperitif and a great accompaniment to smoked salmon, fish or chicken dishes.

It wouldn’t be a true tasting without spirits and vermouths…

10. St Petroni Vermouth Blanco £17.99

This amazing vermouth is made from 100% Albarino grapes. Lees contact adds freshness and flavour to the herbs and botanicals, including wormwood, verbena, mint and Padron peppers, used in the fortification process. Serve across ice with a slice of lemon and a sprig of thyme.

11. Stoli Cucumber, Vodka, £26.99

A vodka for gin lovers! Stoli cucumber is clean and crisp on the palate, bursting with savory cucumber flavor and smooth finish. A pure, clean and natural tasting cucumber vodka. Serve over ice topped with prosecco and garnish with a mint sprig for a real treat.

12. Apothecary Rose £29.99

The old curiosity has 6 different gins to choose from. My personal favourite is the Apothecary Rose. Its subtle and delicate in flavour with fabulous floral aromas. A real crowd pleaser!
