Here at The Whalley Wine Shop we love our enomatic machine! It’s a great way to taste wines from as little as £1! If you haven’t used it before, we’re here to help! Ask a staff member when you’re next in and we’ll be able to talk you through it. This month the staff pick was North American wines, which includes wines from California and Canada. Featuring a VERY special bottle of wine, the Trefethen HaLo, and when it’s gone, it’s gone!! We just have the one bottle open, so make sure you pop in before it all runs out!

Matt explains:

“To access the machines, you get a (free) card at the till, top it up with money, and insert it into the machine whenever you’re ready for a wine. These machines work by replacing wine taken out of the bottle with inert gas, which protects the wine remaining in the bottle from oxygen. This means that the wine stays fresh for some time after being opened, enabling multiple pouring’s over the course of several days. Enomatic machines are increasingly popular in bars and wine shops as a means of giving customers a taste of a wide range of wines that they may go on to buy. It’s also possible to choose between 25ml, 75ml or 125ml servings if you’re looking for a glass of wine rather than a sample”.

The following wines are on offer this month:

1. Marimar Estate Acero, Chardonnay, Russian River, United States

The aromas are classic: fresh and floral, reminiscent of rose petals and jasmine with elegant notes of Golden Delicious apple and Asian pear. The mouthfeel is full-flavoured and chewy but also flinty, mineral, like wet pebbles. Starting sample price only £1.20.

2. Westcott Estate Chardonnay, Vinemount Ridge, Canada

Notes of baked apple, spice and an edge of pineapple leaves the palate wonderfully stimulated and it is simultaneously dry and sturdy, yet creamy and rather curvy. This Chardonnay has a delightful texture and leaves you with notes hinting of honeycomb and brioche which are followed by a sustained finish.  Starting sample price only £1.00

3. Pax Buddhas Dharma, Chenin Blanc, California, United States

Chenin Blanc made from old vines, which gives this Buddha’s Dharma a mineral-laden palate, with a lovely light acidity. Aromatic fusion of crushed flowers and white pepper, which is freshened up by hints of apricot and honey. Starting sample price only £1.20.

4. Channing Daughters, 58% Chardonnay, 19% Pinot Grigio, 12% Gewurztraminer, 10% Tocai Friulano and 1% Muscat Ottonel, Long Island, United States

This wine is fermented with naturally occurring wild yeast. This is a unique wine showing citrus, tropical and stone fruit characters along with wonderful spice notes and great texture! Starting price only £1.20.

5. Westcott Vineyards, Pinot Noir, Vinemount Ridge, Canada

This 100% Pinot Noir has aromas of red fruit and baking spice. On the palate you can expect fresh cherry, dark berry and vanilla notes on the finish. Medium bodied with pleasant tannins and a long finish. Starting price only £1.00.

6. Tête-à-Tête, Mouvèdre, Syrah & Grenache, Sierre Foothills, United States

Like the easy-drinking reds of the Southern Rhone Valley? This Mediterranean assemblage is perfect for you. It is effusively fruity, and ideal for current enjoyment both at home and in your favourite wine shop. Starting price only £1.10.

7. Benevolent Neglect, Syrah, Sonoma, United States

From one of the most well regarded Syrah vineyards in Sonoma, Las Madres. This wine has spent time in brand new Hungarian barrels and you can really taste it. You can expect elegant aromas of violets, blueberry followed by flavours of raspberry tart. On the palate it showcases a perfect balance between acidity and silky tannins. Starting price only £2.10.

8. ONLY ONE BOTTLE AVAILABLE! Trefethen HaLo, 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot, Napa Valley

“A true expression of Oak Knoll District terroir, one can literally taste the flavors of Hillspring vineyard in every sip of HāLo. Your nose is enchanted with botanical aromas of the oak forest which surrounds the vines as perfumed scents of earth, chocolate, bay leaf and cherry dance in the glass. The palate is rich with ample tannins and complex flavors of plum, blackcurrant, tobacco and a touch of peppercorn. To enjoy every nuance of this sumptuous wine, decant before serving. Further rewards await those who have the patience to cellar a few bottles for future enjoyment”. Starting price only £8.00!!
