17th December 2019 by Rachel Wallhouse

We’ve just put 8 very special wines in our enomatic machine. What makes them so special? They’re our staff picks that we’ll be enjoying during the festive period. Why not pop down and give them a try!!

Nicks pick: Kaesler ‘Old Bastard’, 2016, £84.99
Shiraz. Australia. 14.5%
Nick decided on this pick as it showed the best of his character, not the name but the big bursting fruitiness. Cassis, blackcurrants, spices, HUGE, full bodied and full on! Enjoy by fireside chats in big bowl glasses.

Dans pick: Castello Tricerchi, 2013, £37.99
Sangiovese. Italy. 14%
As always Dan pulls out the big Italian guns for his choice. Cherry and plum on the nose. Black cherry, strawberry. Hints of tobacco and chocolate on the palate. Enjoy with pasta ragu.

Rachels pick: Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Rioja, 2009, £99.99
Tempranillo, Mazuelo. Rioja, Spain. 14%
That girls got expensive taste, but after a visit to the winery of Marques de Murrieta, she declared it one of the best Riojas she has ever tasted. Very floral nose, light red fruits to start. Hints of raspberry and a sweet hint of marzipan. Just so many layers, take ten minutes to enjoy.

Daves pick: Grapillon D’or Gigondas, 2016, £21.99
Grenache, Syrah. Rhone Valley, France. 15%
One of our newer team members, Dave loves the Rhone Valley reds, CNDP especially! Stewed black fruits on the nose. Dark berry flavours, hints of smoke and dark chocolate. Lovely grippy tannins. Slam in the Lamb.

Jens pick: Chateau D’esclans ‘Garrus’, £94.99
Grenache, Rolle, Syrah. Provence, France. 13%
The thought of being sat on a yacht, in the Med, sipping Garrus… much more than just a Provence Rose. There are soft red fruit aromas, a hint of vanilla. Lots of texture on the palate. Delish. Maybe a bit of fresh fish from the Med.

Toms pick: Susana Balbo Signature, 2017, £22.99
Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Riesling. Mendoza Argentina. 13%
Tom, regularly comes home from tastings declaring his new find the ‘Best Ever….’ This time we think he might be right. Blimey! Aromatic with ripe stone fruits. Dry mouthfeel, but bursting with fruit and kept fresh with acidity balanced by a gentle use of oak. Great with lighter goats cheese starters/cheese course.

Matts pick: Le Grappin Santenay Les Gravieres, 2016, £45.99
Chardonnay. Burgundy, France, 13.5%
Matts love of Burgundy could well be cited in any divorce papers he receives. He sleeps, dreams, holidays and drinks the place. Fresh, almond on the nose, nutty with hints of apple. Delicate oak characters with a finish of baking spices.

Wild card! Pewsey Vale ‘Contours’, 2008, £29.99
Riesling. Australia. 12.5%
This one was a wild card, think Goran Ivanisevic at Wimbledon 2001. Fabulous distinctive Riesling nose, zesty citrus fruit, hint of petrol. Riper fruits on the palate. Enjoy with salmon, smoked or fresh.

Important reminder!

The Whalley Wine Shop is open from 10.30am-10pm 7 days a week. Over Christmas we have some amends to these opening hours and also some days we are closed. Please click here to see these changes.

In addition to these, at this incredibly busy time of year, to allow you all the chance to shop a bit more easily and with more space we will be slightly changing the hours that we serve wine to drink By The Glass. From Thursday 19th December to Tuesday 24th of December we will only be serving wine By The Glass from 4pm. This is simply to allow people to shop freely and with a bit more space. We hope you understand and would love you to pop down in the evenings on those days and join us for a drink.

Merry Christmas from all at The Whalley Wine Shop.
