To celebrate the end of Wine Education Week I gave the task to every team member to pick their favourite wine or wine hero. Some knew straight away, while others really struggled! We will also be having a week long deal on one of the wines mentioned (scroll through the blog to find the voucher). We love it so much, we just knew you would to! Here’s what I got back:
“A question I often get asked and one that is still impossible to answer! My job has always been to ensure the shelves are filled with great wines for lots of different occasions so narrowing down to one style is nearly impossible. If really pushed though I do love good Grand Cru Chablis… and Vintage Port……and old Riesling! Told you it was nearly impossible…”
“My wine hero must be Lily Bollinger – “I drink Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it — unless I’m thirsty.” Actual hero!”
“Difficult task you have given me to pick a favourite wine after only such a short time in the shop. But, it’ll have to be a French wine called Mas Belle Eaux. The Château is owned by AXA Millesimes and has seen much reinvestment since its creation in 2002 by Christian Seely.
The Chateau is in the Languedoc region of southern France. Several grape varieties have been planted, but the wine that has grabbed my attention in the shop is the Petit Verdot, a bargain at £9.99. This grape variety is traditionally used in Bordeaux blends and I hadn’t really tasted many single varietals of this grape. I was given a suggestion to try an Argentinian version before this, which didn’t really float my boat, so I was sceptical when Mas Belle Eaux was also suggested. I’m glad it was. The wine is rich, complex and bold. More than I could have expected in this varietal and at this price level. I’ll surely be buying it on a regular basis from now on.”
“I knew straight away which wine I was going to go for, the ‘62 Anniversario’ Primitivo, which alway hits the spot! It’s honestly like no other Primitivo on the planet. It delivers massively, with intense and dense fruit in the form of thick inky black cherry, sweet spice and liquorice notes. Fantastic soft tannins and very full bodied. Flavours still resonate in your mouth long after sipping. The real beauty of this wine is that it would food match to a wide range of dishes, with enough sweet fruit to even match with cheeses and meats as an after dinner drink. Even with a price tag of £24.99, it’s still fantastic value for money. Every customer who has been recommended this wine has come back for more”.
“I would have to go back to my first “Wednesday Night Sausage Wine” recommendation- Biferno Rosso Riserva. This is a consistent favourite of mine for a really good value (sub £10) wine. Biferno hails from the little known area of Molise on the Adriatic coast of Italy. Sandwiched between Puglia to the south and Abruzzo to the north, this red wine is easy going enough to be drunk without food but has a delightful crisp acidity to be a great match with tomato based dishes from pasta to pizza. Made from Montepulciano and Aglianico grapes, it has a mellow maturity that comes from a few years of ageing in big old Slavonian barrels. Refreshing cherry and plum notes are backed up by a bass section of liquorice and leather surrounded by characteristic scents of Italian wild herb- delicious! So Biferno is brilliant value and spot on if you’re looking for that easy relaxed versatile wine that isn’t going to break the bank. Biferno Rosso is available at The Whalley Wine Shop, great value at £9.49 a bottle. Try it, you’ll love it!”
“I was recommended this wine on my first day and it is still my go to! Baglio Gibellina Passimento is made from Frapatto and Nero d’Avola grapes, which have been partially dried to give a truly fantastic aromatic wine. It really over delivers at the price of £9.99. Baglio Gibellina is situated in picturesque Sicily where its vineyards are surrounded by the hills of Salemi and Santa Ninfa. The landscape is dotted with vineyards, olive groves, citrus trees and juniper trees, and I really do believe that the beauty of the vineyard is expressed in the glass. This bright intense red wine is bursting with flavours of red berry fruit. The palate is warm and full bodied with harmonious acidity and smooth elegant tannins. From the old vineyards, this wine comes to life with an authentic Mediterranean fragrance, vibrant with the warm winds of the south and the cold wines of the North. This wine makes you want to take another sip!

“I was asked to name my favourite wine, such a massive task, but laden with the same weight as “Daddy, who do you like the best……” I have so many choices, depending on the date, occasion, people I’m with, or people that are no longer with me. But one wine that sticks in my mind, and a very corny, but heartfelt story, while touching base with the shop, is a chardonnay from Burgundy. I had just had my job interview with Tom, hoping to get a part time position at a very interesting, wine shop. Perhaps part bravado or chancing my arm, I went back to the shop and asked for a recommendation. I liked wines from Burgundy, and I wanted a white wine to go with some chicken dish I was hoping to cook. Feeling brave, I suggested a budget of £30. I left clutching a bottle of Jobard Rully 2010, about £21. I got home and told my family I was hopeful. We opened the wine and I knew I had found the right place, I got the job, 24 hrs a week……….no really!! The shop was The Whalley Wine Shop, the guy who helped me, was Dan!!
